Our island
Learn more about the Town of Dorval Island
Dorval Island sits in the St. Lawrence River, a short ferry ride from the City of Dorval on Montreal's West Island. Covering just 0.19 km², it is one of the smallest municipalities in Canada — and one of the most distinctive.
The island is home to approximately 60 cottages connected by unpaved roads and footpaths. There is no car traffic. Residents and their guests arrive by seasonal ferry, which operates from May through October. The natural beauty of the island — its mature trees, waterfront views, and quiet surroundings — is central to community life and carefully safeguarded.
The Town of Dorval Island has been a self-governing municipality since 1915. Residents share a community pool, tennis court, and town hall, and come together through the Dorval Island Residents Association (DIRA). A small, dedicated team of elected officials and staff manages municipal services for this close-knit community.

Sir George Simpson, Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, hosts an elaborate reception for the Prince of Wales (future Edward VII) on the island. The island begins its history as a seasonal cottage community.
